Today I’m going to talk about the names of the months.
Don’t you think it’s weird that octopus has 8 arms, but October is the
10th month of the year?
The truth is, ‘oct’ means 8! Sept means ‘7’ etc.
A Roman emperor called Julius Caesar renamed the months of the year and
included ‘July’ from ‘Julius’ and August from an old emperor called
‘Augustus’.
That’s why the months don’t make much sense when you think of similar
words.
We use words like ‘oct’, ‘sept’ in shapes as well. An octagon has 8
sides!
English is weird, but that’s why I like it!
