Happy New Year. It’s Kendall at Annex. I hope you enjoyed the winter
holiday.
The way to celebrate New Year is very different in Japan and America.
New Year in Japan is a quiet holiday where many people spend time with
family. In America, we often have noisy parties with friends to count
down to the New Year.
Another difference is the things we do for good luck. There are two
things that my family does every year. The first is to put some money
outside our front door on New Year Eve. After midnight, we bring the
money back in the house. That way we have money in the new year.
We also eat pork and sauerkraut, a sour fermented cabbage dish from
Germany. Many families in Ohio eat those foods for good luck in the new
year. I dislike sauerkraut but I always eat a little for good luck.
